Herald Sun Shield Football – Intermediate Winners!

On Wednesday 21 August, both the Intermediate Boys and Girls Football Teams represented the SIS in the Herald Sun Shield Football Competition in Sunshine West… and yes, it was (partially) sunny!

The girls team played a strong MacKillop College (from Werribee) and our girls dominated from the first bounce.  Kicking into a strong wind in the first quarter, we outscored the opposition by a goal… setting the tone for the rest of the match.

Determination, aggression for the ball, team work and school spirit were evident throughout the game with outstanding performances from Ella Fischer, Caitlyn Gorka, Issy McCrae and Livy Batsch (3 goals).

In the end, PADUA 9.8.62 TO 1.1.7 (the first goal the girls have conceded all year!) The opposition coach commented on the skill and team work displayed by our girls.

Next game: Padua College Inter Girls v Caulfield Grammar in Ballarat on September 12.

This set the scene for the intermediate boys match v St. Ignatius, Geelong.

Coaches: Anthony Banks and Steve Veneris had put structures and strategies into play, however, could these be implemented on the field?

This game was a tightly fought contest with both teams showing aggression and determination.

At times fiery, the boys kept the opposition in the game with undisciplined play conceding free kicks and 50 metre penalties, something they will need to work on for the next game. There were only a few goals in it all day and it all came down to the last quarter.

Kicking with a strong wind, our boys got the job done kicking away in the last 5 minutes to win by 15 points… 12.10.82 to 9.13.67

Strong performances from Matthew Jackson, Noah Saracino, Charlie Grant, Billy Taylor and Sam Thompson (5 goals!)

Next game Padua College Inter Boys v Penola College in Ballarat on 12 September.

YES, we now go to Ballarat to play in BOTH GRAND FINALS of the Herald Sun competition…..an amazing achievement by our Year 9/10 students! Both teams were a credit to the school… congratulations to all the students involved.

Special thanks to Anthony Banks, Steve Veneris, Rachel Ball and Matt Laurie for your involvement on the day.
