Ned Kelly: Hero or Villain?

The name Ned Kelly is synonymous with colonial Australia, bushrangers and Australian folklore. The question of whether Kelly was indeed a hero or villain is contentious even today.

Our Year 8 English classes have been exploring what it is to be a hero and a villain, and deciding as to which Ned Kelly actually was. In order to explore the evidence, students completed various activities focusing on Kelly’s actions and the evidence from the text Black Snake: The daring of Ned Kelly.

Students have been engaged with visual displays, deciphering the text through annotation, group work and cross-class collaborations. All of these efforts were to enable students to draw their own conclusion as to whether Kelly was truly a persecuted, noble hero or a blatant, murderous villain. The photographs highlight some of the Year 8 students' detective work and collaborations.
