Deputy Principal's Report

It’s Goodbye to Ten and Welcome to Seven

The home run in any school towards the end of the year is frenetic and especially so at Padua where there is always something happening in the final weeks and days of term 4. Summer has arrived early too, quickly erasing any memory of winter and encouraging students to slop on sunscreen and slap on a school hat each morning. Tyabb staff have been reminding students of the importance of finishing the school year strongly in every sense with correct uniform, full attendance and the completion of set tasks expected at this time of the year. Communication between home and school needs to be clear and timely to ensure a smooth end to what has been a busy year at the College.

Our Year 10 students have been sitting their semester two examinations and are gearing up for their final days on the Tyabb Campus. The vast majority are heading to Mornington for 2018 to pursue VCE or VCAL courses. As pioneers at Tyabb, this cohort of students has left an important legacy and will be remembered fondly for their contribution to campus life. Their final day on 1 December commences with a liturgy and assembly in the morning and concludes with the Year 10 social that evening. It will be the perfect opportunity for these young women and men to transition from Tyabb with dignity and grace.

The new Year 7 cohort for 2018 have commenced their transition to Padua. We have gathered data from recently completed ACER testing to assist teachers in making plans for their classes. A Year 7 Parent Information Evening was held last week in the Tyabb Campus library and was extremely well attended. It was wonderful to be able to welcome the new College Captains for 2018, Bethany Hansen and Stephen Cumming to lead the prayer and address the parents with insightful recollections of their own Padua experience. Mrs Natalie Beattie, who has been appointed in the new role of Student Wellbeing and Growth Co-ordinator, Mrs Kat Tewman, Ms Olivia Beale, Mrs Helen Sugameli and Mr Luke Low, the newly appointed Director of eLearning, communicated information and advice for parents on how they can help prepare their child for the challenges of secondary school. These presentations, along with the uniform modelling organised by Anne Anderson from Dobson’s Uniform Shop at our Mornington Campus added to the evening. The next event is the Year 7 Transition Day on Tuesday 12 December when the new Tyabb students for 2018 will meet their House Co-ordinators and homeroom teachers, and commence their formal induction into Padua.

Please continue to support your children in their final days and weeks for 2018. Staff have been encouraging students to maintain the highest standards of behaviour, effort and commitment as the end of year approaches.

Congratulations to Devlin Webb (Year 8, Cardijn) for his selection in an elite AFL squad. Devlin is off to Fiji in early December and hopefully to Richmond after the 2021 National Draft.
