Transitioning Parents at Tyabb: Year 7 2018

Currently our Year 7 students commencing in 2018 are attending testing days in groups of around 30 students across all our campuses. On Friday 25 August, parents were invited to stay and share a coffee and a conversation around preparing their child for secondary school. We will also run another session on Monday 4 September.

Parents and children vary so much in what they bring to the secondary school experience and where they are placed on the journey of “being ready.” When it is your first child, it is a particularly challenging on all levels and schools working with families can make this a far more enjoyable and successful experience.

We had a great group of parents gather and conversations ranged from children and mobile phones, digital citizenship, travelling on the bus to school, what type of device they require for their schooling, getting your child organised for secondary school and what strategies you can encourage now to support that and so much more. We also had a great number of stories and laughs about parenting teenagers.

As parents when our children were little, we attended Mothers Groups, Play Groups and other activities where parents built friendships and gained support and advice from others around them. Current research suggests that these parental relationships are even more important at this age level as parents can feel very isolated during the parenting teens years.

These conversations are so valuable and my role in working with Padua College Tyabb is to help facilitate these conversations that support the building of effective relationships with the College. Transition of our students can be far easier if we transition families and working together benefits our children.
