Girlsail 2017 Regatta

Earlier this month saw three of our Mornington Padua students, Sophie McKenzie (Year 8), Mackenzie Heyes (Year 7) Grainne Snooks (Year 10) accompanied by teacher, Megan De Lange, compete in this year’s 2017 GirlSail Regatta held at Davey’s Bay Yacht Club (DBYC). The day began as a still, misty morning but turned out to be a stunning Friday. Over 90 girls and 48 teams participated, travelling from as far as Apollo Bay and Geelong.

Laser, 420, Optimist, Minnow, O’pen BIC, Int Cadet and Sabre sailors were paired up to sail in Pacers which was organised by Toorak College in association with DBYC.

The girls spent all day on water and were located on ‘changeover’ yachts on the water where ribs rotated them to their respective boats, as they progressed through many racing rounds in quick succession. There were two courses set, enabling plenty of quality sailing for all competitors, also catering to varying levels of ability. Both teams did well, making it into the final rounds.

The girls were thrilled to meet Australia’s Rio Silver medallist, Nacra 17 Sailor - Lisa Darmanin and also have the opportunity to listen to her inspirational story which ultimately led to her Olympic campaign.
